The Baltimore Orioles faced off against the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards with the Orioles securing the victory 10 to 5. You don’t often see such high scoring games, and anyone with Orioles tickets sure got their money’s worth. This high-scoring game saw the teams combine for a whopping 15 runs! Talk about excitement! Orioles pitcher Jason Berken (6.08 ERA) got the win, while Jeff Niemann (3.80 ERA) took the loss for the Rays. Jason Berken went 6.1 solid innings for the Orioles, allowed 7 hits, one home run and 5 earned runs with one walk and 2 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Orioles was Alberto Castillo (2.45), Chris Ray (6.42), Danys Baez (4.09), and Jim Johnson (3.96). The Rays’s starter Jeff Niemann went 4.1 innings, allowed 11 hits, no home runs and 6 earned runs with one walk and 6 strikeouts. Lance Cormier (3.31), Brian Shouse (5.25), Russ Springer (4.05), Randy Choate (3.90), and Chad Bradford (4.82) also pitched for the Rays. With the win, Berken’s record goes to 5-11, while Niemann drops to 12-6.
Matt Wieters provided much of the offense for the Orioles with an incredible 5 runs batted in. In addition to the 10 runs, the Orioles put up 16 hits and committed one error. Cesar Izturis, Matt Wieters and Brian Roberts all got 3 hits for the Orioles. Felix Pie had a tough day at the plate, leaving 6 runners on base. The Rays’s Pat Burrell had quite a day at the plate, batting in a stunning 4 runs! Ben Zobrist had the most hits for the Rays (3), followed by Pat Burrell (2). The Rays got 5 runs, 8 hits and no errors.
Umpiring duties were performed by Rob Drake, Mike DiMuro, Ron Kulpa and Dale Scott. There were 11,575 Orioles ticket holders in attendance at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The win puts the Orioles at a record of 59-85, (33 games behind the division leader), while the loss brings the Rays to 73-72, (19.5 games behind first place in the division). The Rays will try to return the favor tomorrow. There are still plenty of tickets available so take a look.
