The Tampa Bay Rays got a tough win over the Detroit Tigers yesterday at Tropicana Field with the Rays picking up the W 3 to 2. It was one heck of a game that folks with Rays tickets aren’t likely to forget.
Rays pitcher James Shields (4.79 ERA) got the win, while Justin Verlander (3.74 ERA) took the loss for the Tigers. James Shields went 6.2 solid innings for the Rays, allowed 9 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with one walk and 7 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Rays was Randy Choate (6.20), Grant Balfour (2.13), and Joaquin Benoit (0.79). The Tigers’s starter Justin Verlander went 8 innings, allowed 5 hits, one home run and 3 earned runs with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. With the win, Shields’s record goes to 9-9, while Verlander is at 12-6. Rafael Soriano earned the save for the Rays, bringing his saves up to 27.
In addition to the 3 runs, the Rays scored 5 hits and committed one error. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Rays, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. The Tigers didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. Brennan Boesch could not get much going at the plate as he left 6 runners on base. The Tigers managed 2 runs, 12 hits and no errors.
Umpiring duties were performed by Field Culbreth, Marty Foster, Gary Cederstrom and Ed Hickox. There were 19,843 Rays ticket holders in attendance at Tropicana Field.
