The Tampa Bay Rays squeaked to victory over the Detroit Tigers yesterday at Tropicana Field with the Rays triumphant 4 to 2. It was a thrilling night of baseball that anyone with Rays tickets will definitely cherish.
Rays pitcher David Price (2.90 ERA) got the win, while Rick Porcello (5.50 ERA) took the loss for the Tigers. David Price went 6.1 solid innings for the Rays, allowed 7 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Rays was Randy Choate (6.04). The Tigers’s starter Rick Porcello went 7.1 innings, allowed 5 hits, one home run and 4 earned runs with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Phil Coke (2.30) also pitched for the Tigers. With the win, Price’s record goes to 14-5, while Porcello falls to 4-9. Dan Wheeler earned the save for the Rays, bringing his saves up to 2.
Carlos Pena provided much of the offense for the Rays with an incredible 4 runs batted in. In addition to the 4 runs, the Rays managed 6 hits and committed no errors. Carlos Pena led the Rays in hitting with 3 hits, followed by Kelly Shoppach’s one hit. Willy Aybar had a tough day at the plate, leaving 5 runners on base. The Tigers didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. Johnny Damon could not get much going at the plate as he left 5 runners on base. The Tigers mustered 2 runs, 7 hits and no errors.
Umpiring duties were performed by Ed Hickox, Field Culbreth, Manny Gonzalez and Gary Cederstrom. There were 26,716 Rays ticket holders in attendance at Tropicana Field.
